Soweit mir bekannt ist Michael Collins der einzige der frühen Astronauten, welcher ohne Ghostwriter oder Biograph seine Geschichte niedergeschrieben hat. Umso persönlicher ist dann auch dieses Buch, Interessant, wie er z.B. über seine Defizite in der Mathematik und Astromechanik schreibt (und es dennoch zur Mondumlaufbahn geschafft hat ;-)Ein Page-Turner ... schwer empfehlenswert.
Faszinierendes Buch. Vom Astronauten Mike Collins selbst geschrieben, in humorvollem, wortgewandtem Stil. Unglaublich viele kleine Details und Hintergrundinformationen zu den Gemini und Apollo-Missionen und den Astronauten. Ohne Pathos und Gelaber.Vermutlich das beste Buch über das Raumfahrtprogramm. Unbedingt lesen.
Ich habe das Buch heruntergeladen, nachdem ich mehrfach gelesen habe, dass die Beschreibung von Collins zu den Besten gehört, welche in diesem Bereich zu haben ist. Nach der letzten Seite des Buches kann ich diese Einschätzung nur bestätigen. Collins gibt einen realistischen und nahen Einblick in seine Biografie und vorallem auch einen sehr guten Einblick in das US-Raumzeitprogramm seiner Zeit.
Nice reading, not too technical but also not too emotional, due to the date of writing (1974) the 'aftermath' is not a big part of the book.
Michael Collins ist ein begabter Erzähler, der es schafft, die Ereignisse und Erlebnisse spannend, detailreich und unterhaltsam zu erzählen. Er geht auf technische Details genau wie auf die Seiten der Persönlichkeit seiner Kollegen ein, pointiert, ehrlich, rücksichtsvoll und nie langweilig. Ein wirklich faszinierendes Buch und eine klare Kaufempfehlung.
Ein Zufallskauf in einem Bücherladen in Ecuador. Als nicht spanisch Sprechender war ich froh überhaupt etwas in englischer Sprache zu finden. Was soll ich über das Buch sagen: Als Post-Apollo-Geborener kannte ich das Apollo-Programm bisher nur aus den einschlägigen Sammelveröffentlichungen oder auch diverse Internetseiten. Das Buch ist hervorragend lesbar geschrieben, keine Ansammlung von technischen Fakten, sondern eine sehr lebendige Schilderung eines Mannes, der selber Teil des Raumfahrtprogrammes und vermutlich für immer des berühmtesten Fluges der Menschheit war. Inhaltlich beschäftigt sich der Autor über weite Strecken mit dem Auswahlverfahren, den Tests und Trainings, die schließlich zum Mond führten. Selbstverständlich wird auch der Flug selber abgehandelt. Die Lektüre ist absolut kurzweilig, da das ganze Buch in lockerer Sprache verfasst ist. Ein echtes Zeitdokument, dass vermutlich auch noch in 50 oder 100 Jahren gelesen werden kann. Eine uneingeschränkte Kaufempfehlung.
The book is well written with plenty of humor and down-to-earth language. The book reflects the attitude of Mike Collins and it is an absolutely pleasant book to read. From all the biographies of Apollo astronauts I would read this first because of it great amount of information as well as its writing style and natural "flow"
